Summary of the overall aims of the course

The government is seeking to encourage small to medium sized enterprises (SMEs) to bid for, and win, public sector contracts. However, the tendering process, whether for work with statutory agencies or large commercial contracts, can be challenging for SMEs to negotiate. Many SMEs invest substantial time and money without success.

This one-day workshop delivered by experienced professional bid writer Paul Sharville is designed to help SMEs develop a methodical approach to producing winning tenders and proposals.

If you want to know the critical elements and approaches that will help you evaluate and understand tender opportunities, and then write and present compelling bids, this course is for you.

Course objectives

At the end of the course delegates will be able to:

  • Critically evaluate tendering opportunities and recognise the characteristics of a winnable contract or project;
  • Apply 3 basic strategies to increase your understanding of the buyer's requirements;
  • Identify the expertise and resources (including policies, people and pricing) needed;
  • Develop a rudimentary project plan to deliver a tender document on time;
  • Employ techniques to maximise your score in the tender process;
  • List the features of a compelling and engaging tender document; and
  • Build a bid library to streamline your future tendering.

All of the above will help your business deliver winning tender proposals.

Target audience

This course is ideal for those businesses accustomed to managing and successfully delivering contracts for work direct to a client, but have little experience of formal bidding via the competitive tendering process.

Those who have experience of tendering, but have encountered little success, or have a poor win-rate, will also benefit from attending.


This course is not aimed at those who have no experience of contracts or tendering.

The course assumes basic understanding of where to source contacts and the overall process.

Paul Sharville: Paul runs BidWrite, a company that helps SMEs who never went into business to writer tenders to overcome the challenges presented by the competitive tendering process.

He has personally overseen the production of almost 500 prequalification documents, tenders and post-tender presentations, and was a marketing director for an FM services company that submitted around fifty bids a year, at up to £25 million in value.

He is an experienced business copywriter, speech writer and communications consultant.
