Workshop TitleOn time & on budget: An introduction to Planning and Managing Projects

Summary of the overall aims of the course

The workshop aims to explore the theories and practical skills behind good project management based around the core principles of Prince II. It will define the life cycle of a project and the three dimensions of all projects. Using practical examples you will develop an understanding of Project Initiation Documents (or Project Plan), and effective monitoring and reporting procedures.

The day will also look at the people skills behind managing projects, including what kinds of people make a project team successful, and engaging stakeholders and partners.

Course objectives

At the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Define the key terminology commonly used in project management;
  • Describe the lifecycle of a project and prioritise the core project elements accordingly;
  • Write a Project Initiation Document (PID) with project aims and objectives informed by identified need;
  • Identify the resources, stakeholders and monitoring techniques associated with project delivery;
  • Explain the formal process for changes to projects;
  • Ensure that risks the projects success are identified and monitored;
  • Apply three Root Cause Analysis techniques to understand and resolve issues; and
  • Evaluate a completed project against agreed outputs and outcomes.
  • This course supported the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for project management.

    Target audience

    Ideal for anyone who is new to project co-ordination or who wishes to refresh their skills. No previous knowledge required.

    Nicky McCrudden: Nicky is a Prince 2 trained project manager, and formerly lead county-wide service re-design projects for the NHS. Prior to her health service career she led the implementation in the voluntary sector, including a leisure project for the RNIB.

    Nicky is a certified and experienced trainer who believes we learn best by doing. During the course, she will lead you through a number of activities that you can apply directly to the projects you are involved with.
