Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give my business any name I like?

If you set up as a limited company then you will need to check & register your company name with companies house (http://www.companieshouse.gov.uk/) There are legal requirements concerning your trading name and company name (they can be different) and displaying information where people can see it. You cannot use words like “Royal” or “Government” without permission.

If you set up as a sole trader, and want to give your business a name, you must check to ensure that no other similar business is operating under that name within the local area (a check of Yellow Pages, or an Internet search should identify any existing businesses) Similar rules apply to partnerships.
